Photo: “18th-Century Art” — Taken at Ananda Ok Kyaung Vihara (Buddhist Monastery), Bagan Archaeological Zone, Myanmar, in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. Located beside Ananda Temple, Ananda Ok Kyaung is a small historic monastery best known for its remarkable 18th-century murals depicting richly detailed scenes of Buddhist stories, daily life, architecture, clothing, animals, and social customs.
UPDATE: The monastery was seriously damaged in the magnitude 6.8 earthquake of August 24, 2016. Fortunately, many of the paintings survived, and extensive conservation work has since been undertaken to stabilize and preserve them. The post-earthquake status of the painting shown in this photograph is unknown. The image therefore preserves an important pre-earthquake record of the monastery’s late-Konbaung-period murals.
