Photo: “Seated Buddha at Thatbyinnyu Temple“ — Taken in the Bagan Archaeological Zone, Myanmar, in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. Thatbyinnyu is the tallest and one of the most imposing monuments in the Bagan Archaeological Zone. Built in the mid-12th century during the reign of King Alaungsithu, the two-storey temple rises to about 61 metres. Its name is derived from the Pali term for “omniscience,” referring to the Buddha’s perfect knowledge. The Bagan Archaeological Zone contains more than 2,200 surviving Buddhist temples, stupas, and pagodas built between the 11th and 13th centuries. It is situated on a bend in the Ayeyarwady River, on the central plain of Myanmar.
UPDATE: I am sad to report that Thatbyinnyu Temple was severely damaged in the magnitude 6.8 earthquake of August 24, 2016. Although the emergency-repair stage was reported complete in 2023, after nearly a decade of stabilization and archaeological investigation, restoration work remains ongoing. The post-earthquake status of the Buddha images shown in this photograph is unknown.
