Photo: “Southern Gate of Ananda Temple” — Taken in the Bagan Archaeological Zone, Myanmar, in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. The Southern Gate of Ananda Temple forms one of the principal entrances to the early 12th-century temple complex at Bagan. Its tall pointed arch, massive brick construction, and surviving decorative details reflect the architectural sophistication of the Bagan period. The Bagan Archaeological Zone contains more than 2,200 surviving Buddhist temples, stupas, and pagodas built between the 11th and 13th centuries. It is situated on a bend in the Ayeyarwady River, on the central plain of Myanmar.
UPDATE: I am sad to report that the Ananda Temple complex suffered significant damage during the magnitude 6.8 earthquake of August 24, 2016. Conservation and restoration work remains ongoing. I have not been able to ascertain the post-earthquake status of the Southern Gate. This photograph may therefore preserve an important pre-earthquake record.
