Photo:‍ ‍ “Buddhas of Umin Thounzeh“ — Taken in Sagaing Hill, Myanmar, in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. Sagaing Hill is one of Myanmar’s most important Buddhist religious centres, rising above the Ayeyarwady River opposite Mandalay. Its slopes are covered with monasteries, pagodas, and stupas, forming one of the country’s most distinctive sacred landscapes. Sagaing Hill is a major centre of monastic study and meditation and remains a significant pilgrimage destination for Buddhists from across Myanmar.

UPDATE: I am sad to report that U Min Thonzeh was significantly damaged in the magnitude 7.7 earthquake of March 28, 2025, amid catastrophic destruction across Sagaing. Post-earthquake reports do not specify the condition of its celebrated crescent-shaped interior containing 45 seated Buddha images, although they state that large sections of the temple had to be demolished.
