Photo: “Dvarapala Guardian Figure” — Taken inside Ananda Temple, Bagan Archaeological Zone, Myanmar, in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. The Bagan Archaeological Zone contains more than 2,200 surviving Buddhist temples, stupas, and pagodas built between the 11th and 13th centuries. It is situated on a bend in the Ayeyarwady River, on the central plain of Myanmar.
UPDATE: I am sad to report that Ananda Temple suffered significant damage in the magnitude 6.8 earthquake of August 24, 2016. Conservation and restoration work remains ongoing. The post-earthquake status of this guardian figure is unknown. This photograph therefore preserves an important pre-earthquake record of the figure.
