Photo: “Settawya Pagoda and the Colossal, Unfinished Mingun Pahtodawgyi” — Taken in the Sagaing Region, Myanmar, in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. The massive, unfinished stupa was commissioned by King Bodawpaya in 1790 and was intended to reach a staggering height of approximately 150 metres, which would have made it one of the largest pagodas in the world. A widespread prophecy warned that completion of the pagoda would bring about the downfall of the kingdom. Construction slowed considerably and ceased entirely following King Bodawpaya’s death in 1819. Today, the unfinished monument rises to roughly 50 metres.
UPDATE: I am sad to report that the magnitude 7.7 earthquake of March 28, 2025 caused further damage to Settawya Pagoda and the unfinished Mingun Pahtodawgyi, which was already heavily scarred by earlier earthquakes. The wider Mingun complex and surrounding monuments were also affected by the devastating quake, although detailed public assessments remain limited. This photograph therefore preserves an important pre-earthquake record of one of Myanmar’s most distinctive historic sites.
