Photo: “Dhammayangyi Temple” — Taken in the Bagan Archaeological Zone, Myanmar, in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. The largest temple in Bagan, Dhammayangyi was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Narathu. The massive brick structure was designed on a cruciform plan and is especially renowned for the extraordinary precision of its brickwork, with joints so tight that very little mortar is visible. Much of the temple’s inner passageways were deliberately sealed at some point in its history, which has contributed to its mysterious reputation. Although its upper superstructure is incomplete or lost, its enormous scale and dark, vaulted interior make it one of Bagan’s most distinctive temples. The Bagan Archaeological Zone contains more than 2,200 surviving Buddhist temples, stupas, and pagodas built between the 11th and 13th centuries. It is situated on a bend in the Ayeyarwady River, on the central plain of Myanmar.
UPDATE: I am sad to report that Dhammayangyi Temple sustained significant damage during the magnitude 6.8 earthquake of August 24, 2016, including damage to its entrance area. Conservation work has continued at the massive brick monument. This photograph therefore preserves an important pre-earthquake record.
