Photo: “Buddha at Soon U Ponya Shin Paya” — Taken in the Sagaing Hill Region, Myanmar, in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. Soon U Ponya Shin Paya is one of the most revered Buddhist shrines on Sagaing Hill, overlooking the Ayeyarwady River near Mandalay, Myanmar. Traditionally associated with the 14th century, the hilltop pagoda is known for its gilded stupa, large seated Buddha image, and sweeping views across the Sagaing landscape, where hundreds of monasteries, stupas, and temples cover the surrounding hills.
UPDATE: I am sad to report that this principal Buddha image at Soon U Ponya Shin was catastrophically damaged in the magnitude 7.7 earthquake of March 28, 2025, along with the entire temple complex. Post-earthquake footage shows the head and much of the upper torso destroyed, with the internal masonry exposed and large sections of the image reduced to rubble. Portions of the gilded robe, lower body, and limbs survived. This photograph therefore preserves an important pre-earthquake record of the Buddha image before its destruction.
