Photo: “Soon U Ponya Shin Paya“ — Taken in the Sagaing Hill Region, Myanmar, in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. Soon U Ponya Shin Paya is one of the most revered Buddhist shrines on Sagaing Hill, overlooking the Ayeyarwady River near Mandalay, Myanmar. Traditionally associated with the 14th century, the hilltop pagoda is known for its gilded stupa, large seated Buddha image, and sweeping views across the Sagaing landscape, where hundreds of monasteries, stupas, and temples cover the surrounding hills.
UPDATE: I am sad to report that Soon U Ponya Shin Paya was catastrophically damaged in the magnitude 7.7 earthquake of March 28, 2025. The post-earthquake status of the frog shown in this photograph is unknown. This photograph therefore preserves an important pre-earthquake record.
