Photo: “Seated Buddha” — Taken in Ananda Temple, Bagan Archaeological Zone, Myanmar, in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. The Ananda Temple was built around 1105 during the reign of King Kyansittha and is one of the finest and best-preserved monuments in the Bagan Archaeological Zone. Blending Mon and Indian architectural influences, the temple is renowned for its elegant cruciform design, gilded central spire, and four monumental standing Buddha images facing the cardinal directions. The Bagan Archaeological Zone contains more than 2,200 surviving Buddhist temples, stupas, and pagodas built between the 11th and 13th centuries. It is situated on a bend in the Ayeyarwady River, on the central plain of Myanmar.
UPDATE: I am sad to report that Ananda Temple suffered significant damage in the magnitude 6.8 earthquake of August 24, 2016. Fortunately, all four monumental standing Buddha images survived the earthquake, although Konagamana sustained significant damage. The earthquake caused extensive damage throughout the Bagan Archaeological Zone, affecting 389 historic monuments, including 17 that were completely destroyed. Conservation and restoration work at the temple remains ongoing. The post-earthquake status of the Buddha images shown in this photograph is unknown. The image therefore preserves an important pre-earthquake record.
