Photo: “Mandalay Royal Palace Compound” — Taken in Myanmar in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. The compound occupies the historic centre of Mandalay and was constructed in the 1850s under King Mindon, who established Mandalay as Myanmar’s last royal capital. The vast walled complex is surrounded by a broad moat and fortified by long brick walls, gates, watchtowers, and bastions. At its heart stood the royal palace, administrative buildings, audience halls, monasteries, and residences of the Burmese court. Much of the original palace was destroyed by fire during fighting in 1945, near the end of the Second World War.
UPDATE: I am sad to report that the Mandalay Royal Palace Compound was seriously damaged in the magnitude 7.7 earthquake of March 28, 2025, including the collapse of sections of its famous palace walls. Although restoration of damaged sections of the walls has since been undertaken, the condition of many structures within the inner compound remains less clearly documented. This photograph therefore preserves an important pre-earthquake record.
