The Bagan Archaeological Zone contains more than 2,200 surviving Buddhist temples, stupas, and pagodas built between the 11th and 13th centuries. It is situated on a bend in the Ayeyarwady River, on the central plain of Myanmar.
UPDATE: A magnitude 6.8 earthquake on August 24, 2016 caused extensive damage throughout the Bagan Archaeological Zone, affecting 389 historic monuments, including 17 that were completely destroyed. This photograph records daily life among Bagan’s ancient monuments before the earthquake. It is valuable both as a landscape record and as evidence of the living communities and everyday routines woven through this fragile sacred environment.
