Photo: “Sulamani Temple” — Taken in the Bagan Archaeological Zone, Myanmar, in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. The Bagan Archaeological Zone contains more than 2,200 surviving Buddhist temples, stupas, and pagodas built between the 11th and 13th centuries. It is situated on a bend in the Ayeyarwady River, on the central plain of Myanmar.
UPDATE: I am sad to report that Sulamani Temple suffered significant damage in the magnitude 6.8 earthquake of August 24, 2016. Conservation and restoration work remains underway. The earthquake caused extensive damage throughout the Bagan Archaeological Zone, affecting 389 historic monuments, including 17 monuments that were completely destroyed. This photograph preserves Sulamani Temple’s pre-earthquake architectural fabric before the extensive conservation and repair work that followed and remains ongoing today.
