UPDATE — I am sad to report that the Maha Aungmye Bonzan Monastery was completely destroyed in the devastating magnitude 7.7 earthquake of March 28, 2025. Its destruction was confirmed through remote heritage analysis associated with the Smithsonian Cultural Rescue Initiative. Approximately 75% of the historic structures within the Inwa Ancient Cultural Heritage Zone were damaged, including the complete collapse of 13 pagodas. This photograph now serves as a rare pre-destruction record of one of Myanmar’s defining monuments.
