Photo: “Peacock Glass Mosaic” — Taken inside Kuthodaw Paya in Mandalay, Myanmar, in September 2005 by P.E.I. native Bradford Duplisea. At the foot of Mandalay Hill, Kuthodaw was built in the 1850s during the reign of King Mindon and is best known for its 729 white marble tablets, each housed in its own small white stupa and inscribed with the complete text of the Tipitaka, the Theravada Buddhist scriptures. At the centre stands the gilded Maha Lawka Marazein Pagoda, modeled after Shwezigon Pagoda at Bagan.
UPDATE: I am sad to report that Kuthodaw Paya sustained serious structural damage following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake of March 28, 2025. The condition of the glass mosaic, marble tablets and many of the internal structures has not yet been fully documented. ICOMOS and partner experts have inspected the site, but a final assessment report has not yet been released. This photograph therefore preserves an important pre-earthquake record.
